The main operation of connecting a ship to the tug using a heavy and usually wet rope, was carried out in this area, after a heaving line was thrown up to the ship, the ships crew would tie a small rope to it, which in turn was tied to the main tow rope, or sometimes a wire. This was pulled aboard the tug and manhandled up to the towing hooks. A large steam powered capstan, and wooden fantail covering the quadrant situated above the rudder, are also in this area and a rope store.
